Wingrave Singers
About us
We are an adult choir of about 30 singers who come from Wingrave and the surrounding area, but we also welcome young singers who are still in education.
Since we were founded at the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, we have sung services in over fifty cathedrals in England.
In 2021 we broke out of Covid lockdown and sang the weekend services at Coventry Cathedral, and we have visits planned to Portsmouth Cathedral in April and St Albans Abbey in October, 2022. We also give concerts in local churches and sing at weddings and at celebrations in Wingrave Parish Church.
We sing great music from the 16th century to the present day, including anthems, madrigals and part-songs from Byrd to the Beatles, and we have sung major works such as Handel’s Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Fauré’s Requiem.
Our MD is Colin Spinks, whose father was a founder member of the choir, so Colin has been part of the choir virtually all his life. He is Director of Music at St Olave’s Hart Street and St Katherine Cree in the City of London, and is repetiteur for several choral societies.
We rehearse on Friday evenings between 8.00 and 9.45 pm in Wingrave Parish Church.
We love to sing in some of this country’s greatest buildings, singing the music which was written for these particular acoustics. It is a thrill and a privilege. We are also a very sociable group and our rehearsals always end with a drink in the Community Centre afterwards!
We welcome new members in all voice parts – soprano, alto, tenor and bass. Although it is an advantage to be able to sight-sing, we welcome good singers who may not read well but are prepared to work at learning the music. And there is no terrifying audition!
